Tigray President Getachew Meets with U.S. Special Envoy to Discuss COHA Implementation

Addis Abeba, Ethiopia- Getachew Reda, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, held discussions today with U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa (SEHOA), Ambassador Mike Hammer, focusing on the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), the challenges hindering its progress, and possible steps forward.

During the meeting, Ambassador Hammer reiterated the U.S. Government’s commitment to supporting the Tigray Interim Administration in fulfilling its mandate as swiftly as possible. He highlighted the importance of ensuring stability and peace in the region through coordinated international efforts.

Tigray Interim President emphasized that the U.S. and its international partners must apply coordinated pressure to ensure the full implementation of the peace agreement. He underlined the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Tigrayan refugees in Sudan.

“The status quo is no longer tenable,” the President stated. “Failure to fully implement the agreement will have far-reaching consequences for the peace and stability of the region.”

This high-level engagement also reflects ongoing efforts to address humanitarian and political challenges in Tigray, as the region seeks to recover from the devastating conflict.

Ambassador Mike Hammer arrive in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Abeba on Tuesday to review the progress in the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.

On Wednesday, the Special Envoy met Tsadkan Gebretnsae(General), Tigray IRA Deputy, who discussed the urgency to fully implement the agreement to achieve lasting peace.

“They agreed on the vitality and urgency of fully implementing the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement to achieve lasting peace in Tigray. The COHA proves that dialogue can lead to silencing the guns.” The US Embassy posted yesterday.
