Getachew Reda Pledges to Restore Ties with Afar Following Landmark Meeting in Semera

Tigray IRA President Getachew Reda has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring relations with Afar following a historic meeting with Afar Regional State President Awol Arba in Semera earlier today. The high-level talks addressed ongoing security concerns, explored ways to enhance political cooperation, and focused on revitalizing the deep-rooted ties between the two neighboring regions.

During the meeting, both leaders expressed their shared determination to resolve the tensions that have impacted border communities, which have suffered from the conflict. The discussions placed a significant emphasis on promoting peace and fostering a collaborative approach to security challenges that have long plagued the border areas. Both presidents agreed to work together to ensure that displaced citizens, forced from their homes during the conflict, can safely return.

In a statement shared on social media following the meeting, Getachew Reda noted the historical importance of the Tigray-Afar relationship, underscoring its importance for both regions moving forward. He said, *”We have reached a consensus to fully restore the deep-rooted connection between our peoples. The people-to-people relations that have been disrupted will resume, and citizens displaced by the war will return to their homes.”

The leaders also committed to reopening vital transportation routes that have been closed, ensuring the restoration of key infrastructure and economic activities. They highlighted the need to create a framework for cross-regional cooperation in legal, political, and economic matters to prevent further tensions and promote sustainable development.

Security, development, and political stability were key focal points of the discussion, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of maintaining open communication channels between the two regions. The meeting was described by Getachew as part of a broader strategy to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

Further cooperation on political issues within both regions was also addressed. Getachew Reda and Awol Arba committed to ensuring their respective political entities work together to resolve internal challenges while continuing to foster relations. “We will work hand-in-hand to ensure the full return of peace and the enhancement of relations,”Getachew added.
