Remenbering the Victims of Genocide: A Call for Justice and Prevention on International Day of
Conmemoration
Today, December 9, marks the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the
Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of This Crime. Established by the UN General Assembly in
Resolution 69/323 on September I, 2015. this annual observance honors the victims of genocide
throughout history and underscores the urgent need to prevent such atrocities.
This year, the commemoration is especially poignant as we reflect on the suffering endured by the people
of Tigray, who have been subjected to genocidal war. The ongoing crisis in Tigray serves as a grim
reminder of the devastating consequences of genocide and the global responsibility to act.
Reports ofwidespread massacres, mass starvation, sexual violence, and the systematic destruction of health
institutions, schools, and cultural and religious heritage vividly illustrate the scale of atrocities committed
against the Tigrayan people. These violations meet the international legal definition of genocide, as
confirmed by experts such as the New Lines Institute.
Although the Pretoria Agreement has brought a semblance of peace, severe human rights abuses persist.
Hundreds of thousands of Tigrayans r remain under the control of Amhara militias, ano paramilitary
groups, and Eritrean forces, particularly in the Western Zone, as well as in the North-Western, Central,
and Easterm regions of Tigray.
Two years after the agreement, millions of internally displaced persons (1DPs) are still living in dire
conditions, facing hunger, disease, and unimaginable hardship. Thousands of Tigrayan refugees in Sudan
also remain stranded in unsafe and unstable environments, waiting desperately for the chance to return
home.
The international community must not ignore these ongoing atrocities. Concrete and urgent action is
needed to alleviate the suffering. ensure accountability, and support the rebuilding of Tigray.
We call for:
- To fully recognize and address the genocide being committed against the Tigrayan people and
prevent its recurrence, concrete actions must be taken to bring accountability and ensure justice
for all forms of crimes committed.
The immediate withdrawal of all non-ENDF forces from constitutionally recognized parts of Tigray,
as stipulated in the Pretoria Agreement.
The facilitation of safe and immediate return for IDPs and Tigrayan refugees in Sudan. - Sustained support for Tigrayan survivors and communities to rebuild their lives, including
psychosocial support, livelihood restoration, and efforts to preserve Tigray’s culture and heritage.
