Why do we continue to defend and protect these corrupt leaders, who have betrayed us

Tigray Herald፡December 10,2024 (Mekele)

Wrritten By Teka Nigus

During the brutal attacks on Tigray, our young Tigrayans in Tigray made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our land, our people, and our future. They fought courageously on the frontlines, enduring unimaginable hardship to defend the very core of our existence. At the same time, our young brothers and sisters in the diaspora stood strong, leading advocacy, diplomacy, protests, and fundraising efforts to ensure the world knew the truth of the Tigray genocide. The young fighters in Tigray even took bullets meant for Tigray leaders, who, ironically, were part of the catastrophic failure that led to the devastation we faced. These leaders, who failed to protect us, were shielded by the blood of those who were truly committed to Tigray’s survival.

So, I ask: Why do we continue to defend and protect these corrupt leaders, who have betrayed us, while the true heroes—our young Tigrayans—are left to be forgotten?

Why are we so quick to shield the very individuals who have failed us, while the youth who gave their lives to preserve our identity and dignity are neglected?

The truth is, the time for change is long overdue. Why aren’t we prioritizing the leadership of educated, vibrant young Tigrayans who are ready to lead from the frontlines?

Why are we not empowering them to guide us toward a future of dignity, strength, and unity?

We have witnessed what the youth can do in the face of adversity—they have already proven their dedication and resilience. Now, it’s time to give them the space, the resources, and the leadership positions they deserve.

It’s time to stop defending individuals who have failed us, and instead, focus on the ideas and leadership that will truly benefit the people of Tigray. Our future depends on it. We owe it to the fallen heroes, and to the generations that follow, to ensure that the leadership of Tigray reflects the strength, unity, and vision needed to secure a better tomorrow.

Thanks!!
