Muqdishu warns that formalizing the Ethiopia-Somaliland MOU into an agreement would be considered a declaration of war.
In an interview with Al-Jazeera, Somalia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Balcad—who, notably, is the nephew of President Hassan Sheikh—issued a stark warning. He stated that if Ethiopia formalizes the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) it signed with Somaliland into a full-fledged agreement, Somalia would regard that as an outright declaration of war and would respond accordingly. Balcad declared that Somalia has a sufficient military force to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also revealed that Egyptian military forces would soon be deployed, allegedly at the behest of Muqdishu, with the mission of safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty.
