Importance of Learning from Past Mistakes: Tigray’s Leadership’s Failure to Adapt
Despite previous setbacks, Tigray’s leadership repeated past errors by displacing farmers and seizing land in Mekele, mirroring actions taken in Addis Ababa. The contentious Addis Ababa Master Plan of 2014 sparked widespread opposition, particularly from Oromo farmers and youth, ultimately leading to political upheaval in 2018. The plan’s expansion into Oromia territory exacerbated tensions over land rights and cultural identity, with Oromo youth playing a key role in organizing protests. These events highlighted broader frustrations with Ethiopia’s governance system, revealing the need for inclusive decision-making processes and respect for indigenous rights. To address post-conflict challenges, Tigray’s leadership must prioritize community consultation, youth empowerment, and transparency to foster sustainable peace and development.
