Millions of Tigrayan IDPs and Refugees Face another Difficult Rainy Season!

Salsay Weyane Tigray expresses grave concern for the millions of Tigrayans displaced by the conflict who are facing yet another harsh rainy season under inadequate conditions. Despite promises of repatriation, concrete steps to facilitate their safe return home remain absent.

The planting season has arrived, and the opportunity for IDPs to participate in crucial agricultural activities appears lost. This further exacerbates their hardships. The deplorable living conditions in makeshift shelters, compounded by the muddy environment during the rainy season, leave them highly vulnerable to disease and death.

Salsay Weyane Tigray is deeply troubled by the Ethiopian government’s focus on initiatives such as national dialogue and transitional justice, while neglecting the immediate humanitarian needs of the displaced Tigrayans. We urge the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities (CoHA), particularly the restoration of the pre-war constitutional order. This includes the right to administrative self-rule for Tigray and the safe return of IDPs Addressing these critical issues is a pre-condition for meaningful progress in the peace process. The lack of political will to fulfill the CoHA’s commitments undermines the prospects of lasting peace.

Salsay Weyane Tigray calls upon the international community, especially the United States, the European Union, and other stakeholders, to exert pressure on all parties to the agreement. Prioritizing an end to the suffering of millions of Tigrayan IDPs and refugees must be paramount.
