Turkish government to help restore war-damaged historic Al-Nejashi Mosque in Tigray
After series of discussions between Ethiopia’s Ministry of Tourism and Turkish Ambassador to Ethiopia, the Ministry said today that the Turkish government has agreed to provide the necessary financial and technical support for the repair works of the Al-Najashi Mosque, the tomb of King Ahmed Nejashi, located in #Wukro town on #Adigrat-#Mekele route.
The historic Mosque was one of the many historical and religious places destroyed during the two-year war in the Tigray region.
The Ministry said that the preparations for standard maintenance have been completed, and the work is set to officially begin in few days.
It was also stated that the repair works will be supervised by a team of experts from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (#TIKA) and will be overseen by the Ethiopian Heritage Authority and the Tigray Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau.
Al-Nejashi (Negash Amedin Mesgid) is where the first #Hijra took place by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad following persecution and torture in #Mecca.
The restoration of the mosque was already done with TIKA’s support in 2018 along with 15 tombs of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, which increased the accessibility of this historic site by visitors until the war on Tigray broke out in November 2020.
In 2022, The @washingtonpost confirmed that Ethiopia used a Turkish drone in a Jan attack that killed at least 59 civilians in a school in #Tigray, with analysis identifying the weapon as a Turkish-made MAM-L bomb fitted to a Bayraktar TB-2 drone”
They get money to bomb it with their drones and then get money to “rebuild.”
