Mekelle University: Complicity in Genocide Glorification Must End!”
“The People of Tigray Demand Accountability and Justice”
We, as advocates for Tigray’s human rights and justice, are appalled by the recent actions of the Mekelle University administration in allowing a platform to individuals responsible for inciting violence and supporting the genocidal war on Tigray. Among them is Yegerem Daney, a known member of the extremist Mhebere Kedusne sect and a figure who openly advocated for the atrocities committed against the people of Tigray. His presence and influence at this academic institution stand as a betrayal to Tigray’s pursuit of peace, justice, and healing.
This incident isn’t just a misjudgment—it’s a shameful collaboration in genocide glorification. By inviting and legitimizing individuals like Daney, Mekelle University risks becoming an institution that incites hatred against the very people it was established to serve. Yegerem Daney has shown his support for the brutal campaign against Tigray and even posed with military weapons aimed at terrorizing our community. Such figures have no place in our academic or social spaces, let alone in a respected institution meant to foster critical thought, unity, and healing.
Demand for Accountability and a Public Apology
We strongly condemn the university administrators responsible for this disgraceful act and demand a public apology to the people of Tigray. It is the duty of Mekelle University to stand for truth, justice, and independence. Allowing those who promote hatred and division to infiltrate academic spaces is an unforgivable insult to the victims of genocide and an affront to Tigray’s path toward recovery.
Mekelle University Must Choose: Support for the People or Complicity with Oppressors
To truly serve Tigray, Mekelle University must sever ties with any individual or group that supported or glorified the genocidal campaign against us. Academic institutions should be havens for truth, healing, and progress, not platforms for those who endorsed oppression and violence against Tigrayans. We call upon Mekelle University to take immediate action to prevent any future events that might undermine the rights and dignity of the Tigrayan people.
Glorifying Genocide is a Crime, and Accountability is Non-Negotiable
The people of Tigray will not tolerate complicity in genocide glorification by any institution or individual. We demand a commitment to transparency, accountability, and reform from Mekelle University to ensure it aligns with the principles of justice and the well-being of the Tigrayan people. It’s time for Mekelle University to stand on the right side of history.
