The Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council Thursday said it had requested the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed permission to engage with armed groups fighting it. Council chairman Desta Dinka told Sheger radio that they were ready to talk to armed groups in Amhara, Oromia and Benshangul Gumuz, in a bid to understand their grievances and peacefully resolve the ongoing conflicts. We cannot engage armed groups without permission from the government, because if we do, we might be accused of working with them, Desta said. He also expressed the joint council’s call for the nonviolent resolution of the tension between Amhara and Tigray that was sparked when Tigrayan forces recently recaptured the territories of Raya that were “occupied” by Amhara forces since the 2020-2022 war in northern Ethiopia. Desta emphasised that lasting peace could only be achieved through dialogue.
