Factories are shutting down due to wheat shortage.
Mekelle፡21 February 2023(Tigray Herald)
Although the government claims to have made significant changes in wheat production and reached export, domestic factories are saying that they are suffering from production shortages.
Efforts are being made to increase the production of wheat in various parts of the country and it was said that quotas have been imposed on regions to produce wheat for export.
It should not be forgotten that the export of wheat from the Oromia region was recently attended by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
The day after this happened, flour, pasta and macaroni manufacturing factories faced a shortage of wheat production, so we were forced to stop working, he said.
President of Flour and Powder Products Manufacturers Association, Ato Muluneh Lema, told the Ethio Investment forum broadcasted by Ethio FM; Wheat has become contraband these days, he said, and no one can buy or sell it at will.
In order to get wheat for export, the government allowed only the unions to buy it, and flour producers were told that they would get it through the unions, and later 12 investors were selected and started working, but the flour producers could not get wheat.
According to Mr. Muluneh, who said that it has been 2 months since this problem occurred, the producers have been saving and using the wheat they have and now they have reached the stage of work stoppage. In spite of the increase in bread, the price of 1 kilo of macaroni has increased from 40 birr to 80 birr.
