President Getachew Urges Immediate Aid as Over 4.5 Million People in Tigray Face Emergency.
Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda reiterates call upon federal government and the international community to provide aid for over 4.5 million people in Tigray facing a critical emergency situation.
In a letter he wrote on the new year, the President stated the situation in the region surpassed the capacity of his administration and the people of Tigray.
“The current situation is beyond the capacity of the interim administration and the people of Tigray that forced us to have 4,508,353 emergency beneficiaries who demands immediate and comprehensive humanitarian assistance for survival”
“I urgently request all types of lifesaving humanitarian assistance for the people who are currently dying and migrating due to lack of food and other basic necessities from all humanitarian partners, federal government, regional governments, private organizations and the world community.” The letter read.
Lack of seasonal rainfall compounded by locusts infestation has plunged the population in the war-torn Tigray into a critical humanitarian situation.
On Monday, Redae Halefom, Head for Communication Affairs Bureau in the interim administration, told the Deutsche Welle that over 900 hundred people had died from hunger since September of 2022.
Prior to this letter, President Getachew had issued a statement on Friday calling for swift intervention from federal government and the international community to avert the humanitarian catastrophe in the region.
