U.S. Embassy Welcomes an Inclusive & Credible Transitional Justice Process to Realize Sustainable Peace & Reconciliation in Ethiopia

U.S. Embassy Ethiopia brought U.S. transitional justice expert Prof. Matiangai Sirleaf from University of Maryland School of Law to Ethiopia April 21-27 to discuss the promises and pitfalls of transitional justice processes.
During her weeklong visit, Prof. Sirleaf conducted lectures, workshops, and discussions in Addis Ababa and Mekelle with a range of civil society, academic, and other stakeholders on the potential and challenges transitional justice processes face in facilitating sustainable peace and reconciliation.

The effective implementation of Ethiopia’s transitional justice policy aims to bring about lasting peace and reconciliation.  If successful, it has the potential to strengthen human rights protections and the rule of law.

To discuss Ethiopia’s ongoing transitional justice process, the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia brought U.S. transitional justice expert Professor Matiangai Sirleaf from the University of Maryland’s School of Law to Ethiopia April 21 to 27.

Professor Sirleaf writes and teaches in the areas of international human rights law, post-conflict and transitional justice, international criminal law, and global public health law.

During her weeklong visit, Professor Sirleaf conducted lectures, workshops, and discussions in Addis Ababa and Mekelle with a range of civil society, academic, and other stakeholders on the promise and pitfalls of transitional justice processes and the potential role they can play in building sustainable peace and reconciliation as well as the challenges they face facilitating these objectives.

The United States and Ethiopia share deep people-to-people bonds that ground our 120 years of bilateral relations in an enduring spirit of friendship, respect, partnership, and the shared aspirations for the well-being of the Ethiopian people.  That spirit has propelled cooperation in health and education, agriculture and food security, science and the environment, and many other areas where the United States government and the American people have made enduring investments to help improve the lives of all Ethiopians.
