Ethiopian Federal universities have decried their dire budget deficit

Mekelle: 21 May 2024 (Tigray Herald)

Ethiopian Federal universities have decried their dire budget deficit that has rendered them unable to feed their students due to high inflation, Wazema has learnt. The current budget allocated to universities by the Federal Government is 22 Ethiopian birr (40 US cents) per student per day. Gondar and Wolkite universities told Wazema that they had been reallocating budgets from other programmes to continue to feed students. Jimma University in Oromia said it had reported the problem to the Federal Government, but had not received a response. Several Federal universities contacted by Wazema said it would be impossible for them to provide food to their students with the current budget in the next academic year that will begin in September 2024. Federal universities have recently submitted their budget for the 2024/5 fiscal year, allocating 22 birr for each student per day. Wazema’s effort to get a comment from the Ministry of Finance did not succeed.
