Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government had protested against the statement by the US Ambassador, Ervin Masinga, regarding the conflicts and the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia on May 15. The Ministry said the statement was not reflective of the historical and strong relations between the two countries. The Ministry spokesperson, Nebiyu Tedla, stated in a press briefing on Thursday that the relations between Ethiopia and the US had not been based on strategic and policy issues, but the current and temporary situation. He, however, emphasised that Ethiopia’s protest against Masinga’s statement did not mean the relations between the two countries were facing difficulties. The Foreign Ministry accused Masinga of making unwarranted accusations, reflecting “uninformed assertions”, “factual errors” and giving “unsolicited advice” on how the government should run. Masinga had called for a “temporary nationwide ceasefire” and expressed concern over human rights violations. The US Embassy in Ethiopia was yet to respond to the Ministry’s protest.
