Ethiopian Army Chief admits to ‘terrible actions’ by #Eritrean forces in #Tigray, says ‘Axum massacre was not as portrayed by the media’

Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, Chief of the General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (#ENDF), acknowledged the involvement of Eritrean forces during the war in Tigray and addressed the events in #Axum, #Adigrat, and #Adwa, describing them as “terrible actions” with no system of oversight at the time to “check and balance the other.”

Speaking about the Axum massacre, Berhanu said that “there was damage, but what was said wasn’t the kind that was portrayed for media consumption.” He explained that “the Eritrean soldiers were attacked within the city, and when they retaliated, there were civilian casualties due to the dense population in the area.”

Amnesty International reported that between November 19 and 29, 2020, Eritrean troops operating in Axum, Tigray, were responsible for numerous human rights violations, including the killing of hundreds of civilians, and concluded that these actions may constitute crimes against humanity.
