Curfews have reportedly been imposed in Alamata and Korem town

Curfews have reportedly been imposed in Alamata town, the administrative seat of Raya Alamata woreda, and Korem town. According to the curfew, the movement of vehicles is allowed between 6:00am to 6:00pm, while the schedule for pedestrians is from 6:00am to 10:00pm. According to the information Wazema has gathered, all schools in Alamata and Korem towns and other areas have been closed following the recent clashes and tensions. Wazema has, however, learnt that banks, hospitals and telecom services were still operating in Alamata and Korem towns.

3) The European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ) has called for an “impartial investigation”, under the auspices of the United Nations, on the human rights violations in Amhara and other areas. In a recent report, ECLJ also called on the international community to ensure “accountability, justice and the protection of human rights”. The ECLJ report highlighted the drone attacks against civilians in Amhara, following the 2023 state of emergency, resulting in several deaths and injuries. The report also states that extra-judicial and summary killings, and unlawful arrests and detentions have been carried out in Amhara, adding that non-Oromo civilians were displaced in the outskirts of Addis Ababa and several churches were burnt in Oromia region. ECLJ said it had submitted a brief to the 47th session of the Universal Periodic Review based on the report. ECLJ has a special consultative status before the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

4) Government security forces detained three clergymen of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Addis Ababa on Thursday, the church’s media outlets reported. The reports said the police took away the three, saying that they wanted them for questioning. The clergymen are: the Rev Berhanu Tekle Yared, the General Manager of the Diocese for Southern and Western Africa, the Rev Mulugeta Seyoum, a senior clergy at the Mahibere Kidusan Sunday School, an affiliate religious organisation, and Wasihun Belay, the General Secretary of Mahibere Kidusan. They were being detained at the Federal Police Criminal Investigation Bureau in the capital, the outlets said.

5) The Ethiopian Federal court Thursday ordered prosecutors to file charges against the Rev Belay Mekonnen, a senior Ethiopian Orthodox Church clergyman, who is suspected of fraud attempts against the African Union in Addis Ababa. Local media reported that the court gave the prosecutors 15 days to formally charge the suspect and two of his accomplices, Yared Fisseha and Daba Gennana. The suspects were arrested over two weeks ago for attempting to withdraw more than $6 million from the AU account in the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, using fraudulent documents. According to the reports, the prosecutors told the court that they would  charge the Rev Belay with corruption offences. If convicted, he will face a jail term of up to 10 years. The court denied the suspects bail, it was learnt.
